Repurposed Crib into Book Storage

If you have been following my blog for a while you may have seen this photo posted back in December.

Well, I finally finished it!!

The project itself was actually very simple. Not sure why it took me so long to complete. Lack of motivation… too many other projects to finish… But the fact is that it is finally done and I couldn’t be happier with the results.

Using the front and back panels of the crib, I started cutting out the slats leaving every third one attached.

I then took two of the slats and cut them into 3 inch pieces. These were used as spacers between the front and back.

After nailing the spacers to the front and then nailing the back piece on, I sanded and painted the whole thing ‘ocean breeze’.

I used two pillow cases for the slings (one side of each pillow case per sling) I wanted to be able to remove the slings so that I could wash them so I attached them using snaps. The quote is from one of mine and the girls’ favorite books, ‘I can read with my eyes shut’ by Dr. Suess.

The more that you read

the more things you will know.

The more that you learn,

the more places you’ll go.

I found a font on the computer that I liked, printed it, and traced it onto the fabric. I then colored in the letters with fabric paint.

It actually holds a lot more books than I had expected. I also love that Jocelyn can reach the top sling but Serenity can not. This allows me to put a few of Jocelyn’s work books and writing journals up were Serenity can not rip them apart but Jocelyn can get them on her own when she want to do some work.

  8. I LOVE this idea, visiting from tip junkie link party. We just recently moved our son to his own bed which means we have a crib that by now could not be sold because they are the type that has been banned. But with your post I now have a project to do with it. The kids need a good book shelve and this is perfect. Going to pin it so that I can remember where I found the project.

    1. Ours was banned also. I was told we could call the company and return it but the company closed down so I was stuck with it. Hubby wanted to take it to the dumb but I convinced him to keep it because I knew I could find something to do with it. I'm glad I kept it.

  9. Great project! I'd love it if you'd add your post to my link party too. Here's the URL: ahappyplacecalledhome.com/home/2012/4/13/blogiversary-week-best-worst-of-year-1.html

  11. Excellent idea to re-purpose a crib! I just pinned it on pinterest. I found this on Tip Junkie. Great idea to use pillow cases I love the color and how low it is to the ground to keep it easily accessible for the kids. I really like how you added the Dr. Seuss quote and would love if you linked this up to the ObSEUSSed link collection. obseussed.com/p/books.html

  16. Yes I did totally enjoy your post. I think you have done a wonderful job. Even though the idea is just a very simple one, it has manage to transform an object into something so useful and fully functional. This is a very good alternative strorage solution for magazines, books and other reading materials that are made easily retrievable in the future especially for guests.

  17. Hi, I know this is an old post, but can you share the name of the font you used?
