Duct Tape Fun

I recently received a package full of some fun patterned Duct Tape.

I was so excited but was soon overwhelmed with the amount of amazing projects that you can make with Duct Tape.

I finally settled on creating some fun storage boxes.

I’ve been using a couple of old boxes for toy storage. They fit perfectly inside our cubbies and where the perfect size for holding our legos and puzzles.

However, they were far from pretty.

I fell in love with this orange and white giraffe print!!

Paired up with the neon green, I knew it would be a fun and bright addition to our classroom.

When I started covering the boxes I noticed that the image on the box was visible through the Duct Tape. To solve this I cut some white printer paper to the same size as the boxes, added a dot of glue to each corner and glued it to the box before taping. I used the giraffe tape for the bottom half of the box and then I folded down the flaps on the box (which were originally tucked inside the box) and covered them with the green tape.

I then decided to make some dry erase labels for the boxes.

I used some scrapbook paper, plastic sheet protectors and Duct Tape to make the labels.

Cut a piece of scrapbook paper and plastic sheet protector the same size (whatever size you want your label to be.

Place dust tape on all 4 sides of the back side of your scrapbook paper leaving about a quarter inch hanging over (You can also cut the duct tape in half length wise to save on tape.)

Place your piece of plastic in the center and fold the edges of tape over sticking them to the plastic.

I used a purple permanent marker so that it won’t wipe off. If I ever want to change the labels I’ll just use this trick to erase them and write something else.

A few facts about Scotch Duct Tape:

  1. Very cute! What a hoot that the duct tape itself would cost more than the ghetto storage boxes. But no one would know to look at them! Well done.

  2. I love the upcycled boxes, they look awesome! I'm a fan of the patterned tapes – I made a dress form with Zebra Duct tape!

    1. Wow! I would love to see your zebra dress. I bet it looks amazing.

  3. It looks great but I wonder how durable it is – not the duct tape coating just so much as the boxes in general. I bought some storage boxes from Ikea but due to regular use (I get things out and pop them back in on a daily basis) they're all battered and worn and they're only 3 months old. I think I'll stick to sturdy plastic or metal boxes from now on and maybe try duct-taping them!

    1. I have been using the diaper boxes for five years and they are very durable. I never duct taped mine but I did decoupage them with old magazines.

    2. I've wondered if cardboard boxes could be spray painted? Maybe somebody will see this message and respond if they've had experience in spraypainting cardboard boxes.

  4. Love this! Such a great and easy idea for a gorgeous ending!

    1. No I did not. You could easily cover the inside with tape as well though.

  5. ? for you about how many rolls of duct tape did you use for one of the boxes

    1. The tape I used was two different sizes. The orange tape was a large roll and I used about a third of it. The green tape was a smaller roll and I used almost the entire roll.

  6. Very creative! The idea of modifying an existing storage box to make it more presentable and artistic is really cool.

The design is simple but very artistic. The design colors that you chose really complement each other.

    Thanks for sharing!

  7. Did you just follow the tape all the way around? it looks perfect in the picture i cant believe its just duct tape!

  8. So I came across this on Pinterest & I actually did it last night. I used like a hot pink duct tape on the to half & a white with black mustaches on the bottom half. I LOVE this idea. It's super cute & it was super easy. I saw you're comment above about using a good bit of duct tape on yours. I put the white paper underneath & just used enough tape to cover the box so I still have plenty of duct tape left & the newly finished box still looks wonderful :] Thanks for the idea!

  9. Love this! I have been trying to find storage bins for a play table we have for over a year. Never thought is just making my own.
Did it last night….cut down a diaper box to the size of the cubby, wrapped in a tape and there u go. It's so awesome!

    1. About two weeks after I made these I noticed some sagging on the top layer. I added a small amount of hot glue to the end of the tape, stuck it back in place and have not had a problem since. This post was written over a year ago and I still have the boxes. My girls use them a few times a week and they have held up great.

  10. I have never seen such pretty duct tapes before to be honest. I think I must venture out more and look at every corner of the store next time. Nevertheless, I love those not so ugly storage boxes you have managed to transform from such dull and boring boxes previously. I think the idea is simple, cost-effective and very attractive too (not forgetting waterproof). I am definitely going to give it a go!
