16 ways to add more storage to any home

Lets face it, we could all use a little more storage space in our homes. Here I have highlighted 18 ways that you can add more storage without adding more square footage.

Adding pegboard inside your closet, laundry room, or pantry will keep small items off the floor and within easy reach. via

Installing slide out storage under you kitchen and bathroom sinks allow you to easily reach items that would normally get lost in the back. via

Small shelves are easy to install and can add a ton of storage. Add them behind kitchen cabinets for spices and condiments, behind your bathroom cabinets to hold lotions and cosmetics, or behind your laundry room cabinets to hold stain removers and laundry soap. via

Adding full length shelves behind closet doors is a simple solution to controlling those overstuffed closets. via

A simple tray inside of your cabinets create a make shift shelve and will provide some much needed storage. via

Maximize your kitchen storage by adding slim shelving under the cabinets for spices or add hooks to hang pots and utensils. via

Look around your home for blank walls. Simple open shelving can be added to any room for additional storage space. via

Remove the kickboards under you kitchen and bathroom cabinets and replace them with some slide out storage. Great for large pans and serving trays, folding step stools, or spare towels and linens. via

Placing decorative boxes or baskets above your cabinets is a great way to store items that are not used often. Since the contents is concealed you can use these storage boxes for anything. via

Adding lazy susans to corner cabinets and shelves allow you to store many items while still being able to easily access them.

With just a few supplies from the hardware store you can turn that empty space behind the door in to and amazing storage area. Perfect for supplies in the laundry room, storing books in a child's bedroom, or keep your makeup and cosmetics organized in the bathroom.

Slide out storage solutions not only add more storage but they can hide ugly gaps. Look for gaps around you home next to appliances, furniture, shelving, tub and shower, garage, or closets. You will be amazed at what you can fill those areas with. via

Carving a hole in your wall beteen studs is a great way to use up otherwise unusable space. Conceal the space with a mirror or picture frame. Or you can frame the space and leave it open for a nice display. via

These storage seats not only add storage but extra seating as well. Store your child's toys, books, or even hobby supplies

Rolling storage is a great way to utilize the space under beds and other furniture. Using repurposed wooden boxes or drawers, these can be very inexpensive yet offer lots in the way of storage.via

A simple chain and S hook hung inside your closet can multiply the amount of clothes that you can fit in your closet.

Another place where you will find unused space is inside your stair case. Why not put that space to use by turning your stairs into hidden storage. via

Your bed is one of the largest pieces of furniture in your home. However, with a little work it can also double as an over sized storage area for suit cases, blankets, or anything else you can fit under there. via

  4. Wow, these are some really amazing storage tips! I totally agree with you that extra storage is always welcomed, especially when you have kids around. I have never thought of the pegboard inside your closet or bathroom idea. I think it is a very clever way to replace your wall and fully utilize the wall space, apart from having shelves. The second idea that I think is very smart is the slide out storage under kitchen and bathroom sinks. Those are the areas that are usually left untouched, which can actually hold many stuff. However, I think DIY those slide out counters requires some expertise though. Next is the small shelves on cabinet doors. This idea is very smart indeed! Who would have thought of placing items on the door itself! However, you can only place small jars because doors are not that heavy duty to hold heavy items like large and heavy jars/bottles. Lastly, the clever idea that caught my attention is definitely the lazy susans at corner cabinets. They not only allow you to create extra space but also gives you 360 degree access to all your jars and bottles.

  5. There are so many ways to organize your home and it does not require a genius to do it. These ideas are great and to begin with, these are easy to do. But first and foremost, before getting to working on storage spaces and even building built-in ones, you could take a look at your home and de-clutter your items. De-cluttering is the first step in organizing your home, and this requires planning. If planning is not carried out well, it defeats the purpose of organizing your home.

  6. You have some really great ideas on here, some I haven't seen before. Thanks for sharing them!!!

  7. Hi! I'm Tawn...I'm a packrat. I can break even the neatest of organizers. I am going to try and apply some of your ideas. I may even video the results so that you are your besties can have a good laugh at the idiot :) I might possibly be the world's least organized human. I have the hanging shoe bags in my pantry (messy). I have the peg boards behind the shelves in my kitchen (disaster) and every room is a collection of organizers and organizing do-dads that look worse than the next. Oh bother, I feel like Eyore mixed with Pig-pen had a baby with SchlepRock.

    1. Hi Tawn, I would LOVE to see a video. I'm always up for a good laugh. But seriously, don't feel bad. At least you seem to be on the right track to getting organized. It will take a lot of time and self discipline but I'm sure you will get there.

  8. There are so many different options for cabinets around the house to increase storage. Storage is one of those things for the creative mind. Those who can think outside the box will always have room. Organization is also important.

For bathroom storage, a simple bookcase like stand can store all your essentials and look beautiful too.

  10. Thank you for sharing these great ideas! We are gonna implement these techniques to our new house. Actually, we are running out of storage space and were planning on hiring a self storage unit.
