Kid Friendly Birdhouse Tutorial

Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the post for a giveaway!

My kids tend to be involved in most of my diy projects. Even if it means standing there with a handful of nails giving them to me as needed, they are always excited to help out. Lately my oldest, J, has been showing a lot of interest in being more involved in my projects as well as creating some projects of her own. A couple weeks ago, during one of my projects, she asked if she could try using the drill. After showing her how it worked, followed by a quick safety discussion, I handed the drill over to her. Unfortunately it was too heavy and awkward for her to hold correctly so I ended up holding the drill while she just pushed the trigger. Although she had fun using the drill, I could tell that she was disappointed that she wasn't able to do it on her own.

Amazingly enough, a couple days later I was asked to review a new drill from BLACK+DECKER. BLACK+DECKER recently came out with two new products: The 20V MAX* 1 Speed Cordless Drill and the 20V Max* 2 Speed Cordless Drill. Both drills offer the same speed as previous products, but in a more compact and lightweight size.

When my 20V MAX* Lithium 2-Speed Drill/Driver arrived in the mail I couldn't wait to open it up and test it out. I love how lightweight and compact this drill is. For someone who is 5'2" with small hands, this drill is a perfect fit.

J was also ecstatic and I had the perfect project in mind for the two of us.

Please not that, while I let my daughter use the drill, this drill is not a toy and was not intended for children. It was designed for adults and should only be operated by a child using proper safety measures, under adult supervision.

I started with a single 1 x 6 board that I bought from our local hardware store. Here are the pieces I used.
  • 10 x 6 with top cut at a 45* angle and a hole drilled in one piece (cut 2) - front and back
  • 10 x 6 (cut 2) - bottom and one side of the roof
  • 7 x 6 (cut 2) - sides
  • 10 x 5 (cut 1) - hinged side of the roof

To prevent the wood from splitting (and also to make it easier for my daughter to drill the screws in) I pre-drilled all of the holes. I also used a larger drill bit and drilled down slightly over each hole so that the heads of the screws would be flush with the wood.

J started by attaching the sides of the birdhouse to the front and back pieces. She loved how lightweight the drill was and she was actually able to hold it up by herself.

She then attached the base and one side of the roof.

We used hinges to attach the other side of the roof. This allows us access to the inside in case we ever need to clean it out. J was so proud of her birdhouse and couldn't wait to paint it!

I love how the battery of the drill stayed charged and the speed was consistent throughout the entire project. With its compact size, this is the perfect drill for getting into tight spaces. It would also make a great gift! It may be too late for Fathers Day but Christmas is only 6 months away;)

With the 4th of July around the corner, the girls decided to paint it similar to the american flag.

We added a couple hooks and a chain to the roof to hang it. It's hanging in a tree outside the girls window so they can keep a close eye on it. I love the fact that J is so proud of this project! It was definitely one of my favorites as well.
